Stronger Bones, Healthier Bodies

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. This leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture, particularly of the hip, spine and wrist. Osteoporosis is known as “the silent thief” because bone loss occurs without symptoms. Osteopenia is a thinning of the bones, but less than that with osteoporosis. It is the stage before true osteoporosis.

Bone density responds to exercise intensity and a force greater than it is accustomed to, as opposed to duration or a repetition of the same amount of force. Weight or resistance training has the ability to progressively challenge bones. When you increase the weight or resistance, you “surprise” the bone and cause it to adapt to the new stress. Bone responds by producing more osteoblasts, cells that fill in bone cavities, and bone density improves.

Our program is based on progressive weight training. In small groups, you will work on core strengthening, circuit training and weight bearing exercises. The class will begin with stretching and then move to a whole body workout that concentrates on bone strength, but also works on the cardiovascular system, balance and posture.

During the course of the program we will perform a variety of progressive weight exercises incorporating the use of dumbbells, tubing, cuff weights, manu resistance, and steppers to focus on particular areas of the body that are most at risk for osteoporosis. We will also work on flexibility, mobility and balance.

The class meets twice weekly in our Wellesley Center on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8-9. A half hour consultation with Lauri Sawyer before the beginning of the program is required.

Cost: $300 for 12 classes
