A sub-specialty of internal medicine, Rheumatology centers around the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. Rheumatologists address diseases and conditions related to joints, soft tissues, autoimmune issues, vasculitis and connective tissue disorders – arthritis, and related rheumatic diseases.
The term Rheumatology comes from the Greek word rheuma – which means “that which flows as a river or stream,” and the suffix –logy, which means ‘the study of.” This rapidly evolving medical specialty, has identified issues related to immunology associated with certain conditions – now described in terms of the autoimmune system or autoimmune disease. Most corresponding treatment modalities are also based on clinical research in immunology and the resulting improved understanding of the genetic basis of rheumatologic disorders.
