Bone Density

Bone Density

Osteoporosis, or the loss of bone tissue with advancing age, is a major problem affecting approximately 10 million Americans (80% women to 20% men.) The condition can result in painful and debilitating fractures while costing $14 billion annually to treat. One of the most significant recent medical advances is the development of effective medicines to treat this condition, along with the technology called Dual Energy X ray absorptiometry (DXA) to diagnose osteoporosis at the earliest stages and to monitor the effects of medical therapy.

The Marino Center is now offering DXA examinations, which are recommended for people at risk of the condition including post-menopausal women; men over age 70 - particularly those with a family history of osteoporosis - and younger people who have risk factors including chronic steroid medication use and more. DXA is a quick, easy procedure that involves an extremely low radiation dose.

Prevention is always the best medicine, and with the advent of DXA for diagnosis coupled with effective medications, today, fractures due to osteoporosis can be prevented.
