Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. This leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture, particularly of the hip, spine and wrist. Osteoporosis is often known as "the silent thief" because bone loss occurs without symptoms.
Osetopenia is a thinning of the bones, but less seen with osteoporosis - it is the stage before true osteoporosis. Bone density is described in relationship to what it should be in young women; it is expressed as a standard deviation from the mean (average) bone density in a 35-year-old. Within 1 standard deviation of the mean in either direction is considered normal. A bone density within the range of 1 to 2.5 standard deviations below the mean is defined as osteopenia, and greater than 2.5 standard deviations below the mean is osteoporosis.
