Cancer, Dignity, and Wisdom
Mobilizing the Self-Healing Response through Insight, Body Awareness, and Creativity
An 8-week program for transforming the crisis of cancer into an opportunity for deep personal learning, transformation and recovered wholeness.
Program Description
The diagnosis of cancer is a critical event, a profound intrusion in our lives on all levels. It puts us in touch with our mortality, and can be a uniquely powerful time to question how we want to live. This breakthrough program is based on the conviction that healing is a natural process that is enhanced by releasing self-limiting habits and destructive patterns that prevent us from living full and authentic lives.
In a supportive group setting, this unique journey of self discovery will include:
- group discussion and learning
- imagery
- writing
- art
- movement
- music
- dream work
Over the past 6 years, more than 150 people have benefited from Cancer, Dignity and Wisdom in residential retreats. Through ongoing research studies these participants have consistently reported:
- a significant decrease in psychological stress
- improved mood
- healthier adjustment to their cancer diagnosis
- more spiritual wellbeing
- enhanced quality of life
The Marino Center has partnered with Matthew Budd, MD and Alison Shaw, RNP to offer the same valuable experience in a convenient evening program.

FAQ
Who is this program appropriate for?
Anyone at any stage of their journey with cancer may participate. Whether you have just received a diagnosis, are in the middle of treatment, or have been in remission for years, this program is appropriate for you.
Do I have to be a current patient at the Marino Center?
No. This program is open to all individual regardless of where they receive their medical care
How is this different than a cancer support group?
During this program you will experience tremendous support from sharing your experience with and learning from other participants as well as the course leaders. The intention of this program is to engage actively in exploring and transforming your relationship with yourself and your illness, and in this way, it goes beyond a typical sharing-based support group.
How is this different from a mind-body or stress management workshop?
In this course, we will not focus on the techniques of meditation or stress management, though these are invaluable tools for healing. Rather, we will be asking the question: how do my patterns and habits of thinking, being and acting create and perpetuate the experience of stress, and how can I generate the experience of life as full of possibility and peace?
