Bone Density
Osteoporosis, the loss of bone tissue with advancing age, is a major scourge effecting 10 million Americans (8 million women, 2 million men) resulting in fractures costing $14 billion dollars to treat annually. One of the most significant recent medical advances is the development of effective medicines to treat this condition, along with the technology called Dual Energy X ray absorptiometry (DXA) to diagnose osteoporosis at the earliest stages and to monitor the effects of medical therapy.
The Marino Center is now offering DXA examinations, which are recommended for people at risk of the condition including post-menopausal women; men over age 70, particularly those with a family history of osteoporosis; and people who have taken steroid medications for 3 months or more. DXA is a quick, easy procedure that involves an extremely low radiation dose.
Prevention is always the best medicine, and with the advent of DXA for diagnosis and effective medications, osteoporosis has become preventable to a high degree. If you are diagnosed with osteopenia (mild bone loss) or osteoporosis, we offer a class called Stronger Bones, Healthier Bodies. Click here for more information.
